What is Leadership Development in the NHS?
Great leadership saves lives. Research shows that investment in leadership and team working reduces mortality and improves patient experience. The NHS is undergoing the biggest reform it has ever seen. Developing leaders at every level is more important than ever before.
Leadership development is about helping people to reach their potential. We support people from the start of their leadership journey to the top of their careers. We uphold the NHS Constitution to ensure that every member of staff can improve the experience of patients and their families, carers and communities.
Who can access NHS Leadership Development?
Enthusiastic NHS staff from all professions, background and levels across NHS South of England can access leadership development. In 2010/11 this was more than 4,000 people.
Programmes range from half day masterclasses on service improvement to year-long accredited programmes on coaching. We offer Masters level academic courses and fellowships and also deliver bespoke support for teams and organisations.

Who are we?
The NHS South of England Leadership Development team is an alliance between the South East Coast, South Central and South West Strategic Health Authorities. We work closely with NHS organisations across our region. We commission and deliver leadership development and talent management programmes. Our staff are expert in:
- Learning and development
- Organisational development
- Service improvement
- Event management.
We are developing a shared leadership development strategy for NHS South of England and this will be available here very soon.

Leadership development in NHS South of England is based upon the NHS Leadership Framework and the NHS Outcomes Framework to ensure that allprogrammes match to NHS priorities and support specific improvements in local health needs.
